For our first episode, we’re thrilled to have John Warrillow as our inaugural guest. John is the author of Built to Sell: Creating a Business That Can Thrive Without You, and in this episode he shares tips on how you can build a high-value company. Even if you’re not thinking about selling today, you can’t afford to turn a blind eye to the process.

Topics covered include:

  • Action steps to developing a sellable company
  • The hub-and-spoke manager vs. the apple picker
  • The Switzerland structure
  • How to sell “air”

Plus, John helped us kick-off our “Lightning Round” and “Five Words of Wisdom” segments. All that and more for our first episode. Enjoy!

Loved the podcast. I bought John’s book Built to Sell.

    • Dave Kelley

Thanks, Eric. Great feedback. We’re looking forward to having John as our Keynote Speaker at Summit this September in New Orleans.

  • Andrew Wells

Great discussion. Also somewhat depressing where he says that construction companies are the least saleable of all companies. I would therefore ask for discussion on how we can use our companies as a tool to generate wealth in other areas so that the we don’t have to rely on the ultimate sale of a business for retirement. I know owning real estate occupied by your business is good…what else? Especially since we are remodelers. Flips? Residential or commercial investments? Any other ideas?
Thanks for the first podcast. Looking forward to seeing John speak in NOLA.

    • Great points, Andy! Those are very good discussion points. I’ll be sure to share with John ahead of his keynote in September!
